Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
How do I convert decimal hours to minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 0.4 hours is 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 3.4 hours is 3 hours 24 minutes.
Why do payroll systems use decimal hours?
Decimal hours make multiplication simple: 7.75 hours × 20 per hour = 155. Multiplying by hours and minutes directly would require converting anyway.
What rounding should I use for timesheets?
It depends on your employer or contract. Common choices are the nearest 0.25 (15 minutes), 0.1 (6 minutes) or 0.01. Use the rounding option to match your policy.
