Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. 25% off 80 is 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20 saved, so you pay 60.

Do two discounts add up?

No. A 20% discount followed by an extra 10% off is a total of 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. The calculator applies them in sequence.

Is tax applied before or after the discount?

Almost everywhere tax is charged on the discounted price, which is what this calculator does. The discount comes off first, then tax is added.

How do I check what percent off a sale really is?

Switch to Find % off, enter the original and sale prices, and the real percentage saving is shown.
