Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. A 100 item that cost 60 has a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup.
How do I calculate profit margin?
Profit margin = (revenue − cost) ÷ revenue × 100. With revenue 100 and cost 60, profit is 40, so the margin is 40%.
How do I find the price for a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − 0.30). For a cost of 70, the price is 70 ÷ 0.70 = 100. Choose Cost & margin % to calculate it automatically.
Is this gross or net margin?
It is gross margin: only the cost you enter is deducted. Include all direct costs in Cost per unit; overheads, tax and interest are not subtracted.
