Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% is customary for table service, with 18–20% typical for good service. In many European and Asian countries tipping is lower or already included; 5–10% or rounding up is common. Follow local custom.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically standard but most people tip on the total. Tick Tip on pre-tax amount and enter the tax rate if you prefer the former.
How does rounding work?
Round total up makes the overall bill a whole number by increasing the tip. Round per-person up makes each share a whole number. Round tip up rounds only the tip itself.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, enter each person’s share as the bill and calculate their tip separately.
