Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 100 × 1.20 = 120, so the VAT is 20.
How do I remove VAT from a price that includes it?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100, so the VAT inside 120 is 20. Subtracting 20% of 120 would be wrong because the tax was calculated on the smaller net price.
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
Both are consumption taxes charged at each stage of supply with the tax on purchases credited back. VAT is the term used in Europe and many other countries; GST is used in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and Singapore.
Which rate should I use?
Use the rate that applies to your product and country. Standard rates vary from about 5% to over 25%, and many goods have reduced or zero rates, so check with your tax authority.
