How to generate a hash

  1. Type or paste text, or click Hash a file to pick any file from your device.
  2. Five hashes appear instantly. Click Copy next to the one you need.
  3. To verify a download, paste the published checksum into the comparison box; a match is highlighted.

Features

Five algorithms

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512.

Text or files

Hash documents and downloads without uploading them.

Checksum verify

Paste an expected hash and see if it matches.

Private

Everything is generated in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hash?

A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, but changing even one character gives a completely different one, and the original cannot be recovered from the hash.

Which algorithm should I use?

Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for integrity checks and security. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes because collisions can be created, but they remain handy for non-security checksums and legacy systems.

Can I hash passwords with this?

Do not store passwords as plain SHA or MD5 hashes. Use a slow, salted password hashing algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 on the server.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Files are read and hashed locally in your browser; nothing leaves your device. SHA hashes use the built-in Web Crypto API and MD5 is computed by code on this page.
