Scan QR codes without installing an app
Modern phones can scan QR codes in the camera app, but on a laptop or desktop it is harder. This scanner works in any current browser on phones, tablets and computers. Press Start camera and the code is detected within a moment, or upload a screenshot or photo if the QR code is already on your device, for example in an email, a PDF page or a chat message.
QR codes can hold website links, plain text, contact cards, WiFi logins, payment requests and more. The decoded content is shown as text, so you can see exactly what is inside before you do anything with it. If it is a web address, an Open link button appears. Because scammers sometimes place fake QR codes on posters and parking signs, always check where a link leads before you open it, and never enter passwords or payment details on a page you reached from an unknown code.
All decoding happens on your device. The camera picture is analysed frame by frame in the browser and is never recorded, uploaded or stored. If scanning does not work, hold the code steady in good light, move closer until it fills the frame, and make sure the whole code, including its white border, is visible. If your camera is blocked, allow access in your browser settings or use the image upload instead.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the scanner say camera permission was denied?
Your browser or device blocked camera access for this site. Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, allow the camera, reload the page and try again. You can also use the Upload image tab.
Is it safe to scan unknown QR codes?
Scanning only reads the text. The risk is in what you do next. Check the link carefully before pressing Open link, and be careful with codes on stickers or posters, which can be replaced by scammers.
Does the website store my camera video or images?
No. Video frames and uploaded images are processed locally in your browser and are never sent to a server or saved.
What can I scan?
Standard QR codes, including links, text, WiFi codes and contact cards. This tool shows the decoded text. Other barcode types such as EAN or CODE128 are not supported.
Why is my image not recognised?
The picture may be blurry, too small, cropped, or have low contrast. Try a sharper image where the whole QR code, including its white border, is visible.
