Frequently asked questions
What is natural sort order?
Natural order compares the numbers inside text by value, so “chapter 2” comes before “chapter 10”. Plain alphabetical order would put “chapter 10” first because “1” sorts before “2”.
How does numeric sort handle lines without numbers?
Lines are sorted by the first number they contain. Lines without any number are placed after the numeric ones, in alphabetical order.
Can I sort by the last name or a specific column?
Not directly — this tool sorts whole lines. For column sorting, paste your data into a spreadsheet, or put the sort key at the start of each line.
Does shuffle give a different result each time?
Yes. Shuffle uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle with a fresh random order every click.
