Free text to speech in your browser

Text to speech turns written words into spoken audio. It helps people who prefer listening to reading, learners practising a new language, writers who want to hear how their draft sounds, and anyone who has to proofread a long document. Hearing text read aloud makes typos and awkward sentences easier to catch than reading silently.

This tool uses the Web Speech API that is built into modern browsers. That means the voices come from your device and operating system, so the choice depends on your setup: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS each include voices for many languages, and browsers like Chrome and Edge may add extra natural-sounding ones. Because nothing is sent to a server, it is private, free and works for any length of text. Long text is read in small parts so the browser does not stop in the middle.

Speed runs from half speed to double speed, which is useful for studying or skimming, and pitch changes how high or low the voice sounds. This page reads the text aloud but does not create an audio file, since browsers do not allow recording the built-in voices. If you hear no sound, check your volume and the voice list, and install more voices in your system language settings if the list is empty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the voice list empty or missing my language?

Voices come from your device and browser. Install extra voices in your system settings (for example Windows Speech settings or iOS Spoken Content), then reload this page. Chrome, Edge and Safari usually offer the most voices.

Can I download the speech as an MP3?

No. Browsers do not let websites record the built-in voices, so this tool reads the text aloud but cannot save audio. You can record your device audio with a separate recorder if you need a file.

Why does it stop on long text?

Some browsers cut off very long speech. This tool splits your text into small parts and reads them one after another, so long texts should play to the end. If it stops, press Stop and Play again.

Are my words sent to a server?

No. The browser’s speech engine reads the text on your device. The page never uploads your text.

How do I change the language?

Pick a voice for that language from the Voice list. Each voice reads text in its own language, so choose one that matches your text.
