What is a good typing speed?
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). By convention, one "word" is five characters, including spaces and punctuation, so the test counts every five correct characters as one word. This makes scores comparable between people and between tests, no matter how long or short the real words are.
Most people type between 38 and 45 WPM on a keyboard. Office jobs often ask for 40 to 60 WPM, professional typists and transcribers reach 70 to 90 WPM, and competitive typists pass 120 WPM. A faster score is only useful when it is accurate, because every mistake you have to fix costs more time than typing slowly would have.
To improve, practise a little every day instead of one long session. Keep your eyes on the screen, use all ten fingers, keep your wrists relaxed and aim for a steady rhythm. Try the 3 minute test when you want a reliable number: it smooths out a slow start or one lucky sentence. Everything runs in your browser, and the only thing stored on your device is your personal best.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Only characters that match the text count, so mistakes lower your score. Gross WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
What is a good typing speed?
The average is about 40 WPM. 50 to 60 WPM is good, 70 to 80 WPM is very good, and anything above 100 WPM is expert level. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as speed.
Can I fix mistakes while I type?
Yes. Use Backspace to correct a mistake. Each wrong key press is still counted as an error, because it shows in your accuracy, but the corrected text counts toward your speed.
Why can I not paste text?
Pasting is blocked so the test measures real typing. Copying the text would give a false result.
Is my score saved anywhere?
Only in your own browser (local storage) so you can compare against your personal best. Nothing is sent to a server.
